During the early 1900s, the Radium Girls, hired to paint watch dials for soldiers in World War I, ingested lethal amounts for radium. The United States Radium Corporation (USRC) was held accountable for negligence for providing their workers with deliberately misleading information. Despite their tragic experiences, these women were crucial in developing future labor worker’s rights, leading to organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Today, employers are responsible for workers' health and safety, and must compensate employees for work-related illnesses.

"News coverage of the Radium Girls shows how horrific their story became." (Morgan 2024)
